*which should also include a section asking the client about any allergies or prior reactions they may have experienced*

It is so important to gather this information from clients BEFORE you lash, tint or lift them and will save you many potential problems.

Recognising Sensitivity - Before it Occurs

If you have a client who has had any sort of reaction in the past to any products the first thing you will need to understand and gather information on is exactly;

  1. How they reacted
  2. Where they reacted
  3. What they reacted too

Getting this information is important for it gives you an understanding of if it was a product reaction or a technician’s error they reacted too.

Did they have blood shot / red eyes? = Technicians Error - pads/tape too high.

Did they have swelling under eye area? = Product Reaction (potentially eye pads or tape).

Did their eyelid swell? = Product Reaction (usually, but not exclusively the glue)

Was it itchy during application? = Technician Error (placing extensions too close to the skin for example) OR could be the start of a Product Reaction.

You also need to asses the situation visually too.

Here are some visual representations and indications you can use to determine if you proceed with extensions / lift or not:

OK TO PROCEED

The inner corner of the clients eye lid is flat and her eyelid skin is smooth. This shows no signs of any sensitive.

PROCEED WITH CAUTION

In this photo you can see that the inner corner of the eye is starting to lift and also the eyelid skin texture is starting to change.

See below for what products to use on this category of client.

PROTECT & PROCEED WITH CAUTION

The inner corner of the eye is slightly raised, under her eye the skin is slightly pulling into her inner corner. She is showing possible signs of sensitivity that could be caused from seasonal allergies. This lid must always be protected when you lash.

The client may also show pinkness on her eyelid which is an indication that she is sensitive to something.

See below for what products to use on this category of client.

DO NOT PROCEED

Redness on the eyelid is a huge indication that you must not proceed with lashing. This will most certainly develop into a reaction.

It is recommended at this stage that you advise your client to seek medical attention.

Important Information on Prevention

Eye lash glue has vapours, those vapours have small molecules and those molecules settle on the skin which will cause sensitivity and may develop into allergies.

Using a Barrier Cream puts a film over the eyelid and will shield the glue molecules from settling on the eyelid.

What Products To Use On Sensitive Clients

If a client falls into the category of ‘Proceed With Caution’ or ‘Proceed & Protect with Caution’ (as above) then the following procedure is recommended for these clients.

 1. Holy Nude Sensitive Glue - occasionally clients will react to the black pigment in lash adhesive. Holy Nude is a clear glue so reduces the likelihood of a reaction. It is also low fume and low irritant.

2. Hydro Gel Pads - sometimes reactions can occur from eye gel pads. Not all pads are made from the same ingredients. Locks Lash Gel Pads are made from predominately water and hence are less likely to cause a reaction.
