Lash lifts have officially cemented their place as the go-to service for effortless, natural beauty.
A killer alternative to extensions, lash lifts give natural lashes a curl, lift, and longer-looking effect, without the need for mascara or a lash curler (we see you, lash breakage 👀). With results lasting up to 8 weeks, this is the ultimate add-on for any beauty menu.
Haven’t jumped on the lash lift train yet? This is your sign to get certified in lash lifts, like now.
But like any treatment, sometimes things don’t go quite to plan, and one of the most common mishaps? The dreaded overcurl.
Let’s dive into what causes overcurling, how to fix it, and how to avoid it in the first place.
Why Are My Client’s Lashes Over Curled?
Here are the most common culprits:
Over-processing
Leaving the lifting solution on too long can cause lashes to curl excessively or even become damaged. Timing matters — and every client’s lash type and condition is different. Get familiar with processing times for various lash types to avoid mishaps.
Using the wrong size shield
A common myth: smaller shield = better curl. Nope. Too-small shields = overcurling into the eyelids. You want a size that complements your client’s natural lash length. Locks Lash stocks shields in XS to XL to suit every lash type.
Shield placement issues
The shield must sit flush against the lash line. On clients with hooded eyes or excess lid skin, use tape to gently lift the area and get that shield perfectly in place.
Not fully removing Step 1 or 2
If solution residue is left behind, it can keep processing and damage the lashes. Always remove thoroughly and finish with a foam cleanse to give lashes a final bath.
Incorrect solution application
Applying the solution too high on the lash (especially to the tips) leads to frizz and overcurling. Apply up to the shield bump, not beyond.
Pro tip: Cover the tips with tape to avoid accidentally coating them.
How to Fix Over Curled Lashes
If the lashes still feel healthy, you can try the following method to relax them:
👉 Apply Step 1 using a spoolie to brush the lashes against the lift (downward direction).
👉 Leave for 4–5 minutes max, no longer.
👉 Gently remove with a dry cotton bud.
👉 Apply Step 2, reducing the time slightly (e.g. 3–4 minutes), and remove the same way.
⚠️ If lashes feel weak or fragile, DO NOT reprocess them.
Let the lash cycle do its thing, wait 4–6 weeks until new lashes grow through. Health over speed, always.
Aftercare = Lash Lifesaver
Recommend a nourishing aftercare product like Browgasm; a powerful peptide and keratin-rich serum designed for both lash lifts and brow laminations. It strengthens, lengthens, and speeds up lash growth. Apply daily using a spoolie.
Other Reasons Your Lash Lift Might Not Be Lifting…
Too much glue or balm
A thick glue barrier can prevent the solution from doing its thing. Less is more, and if you overdo it, use a Y-tool or microstick to remove excess before lifting.
Poor storage of solutions
Step 1 and 2 are chemical-based and sensitive to air and light.
Improper cleansing before treatment
Clean lashes are non-negotiable. Makeup residue or oils can ruin your results. Start clean, end flawless.
EXTRA HOT TIPS 🔥
👉 Always remove Step 1 & 2 with a dry earbud, not damp!
👉 If lashes lift off the shield mid-process, use the cotton from inside a cotton round as a lash compensator to re-secure them.
👉 Cling film can help speed up processing. Wrap it tight and watch it work!
