Meet Vanessa Hendriks: NZ Lash Industry Award Winner & Locks Lash Educator 🇳🇿

Introducing our fabulous Locks Lash Educator from Auckland, Aotearoa/New Zealand-Vanessa Hendriks! A Classic Advanced Lash Artist and winner of the NZ Lash Industry Award, Vanessa brings passion, artistry, and authenticity to everything she does.

     

What first drew you to the lash industry?

Honestly, it was such an unplanned thing. I’d been getting my lashes done since I was 15, and my lash tech mentioned a training. I thought, “What have I got to lose?” I always knew I wanted to work in beauty, but lashes weren’t on my radar. I’m so glad it happened, it was meant to be!

Was there a defining moment when you knew this was your calling?

After about a year of lashing, I realised it was the first job I’d ever had where I actually looked forward to going to work. Meeting clients, creating art, and helping people feel confident, my salon became my happy place.

What was it like winning the Advanced Classic Eyelash Extensions award?

Best moment of my career 100%! I had so much self-doubt and imposter syndrome, I didn’t think I’d even place. Walking the runway to accept my award with friends and strangers cheering was surreal.

What did preparation for the competition look like?

Lots of nerves! I’m a perfectionist, so I was hard on myself. I found a model, worked on the set for three hours, took before-and-after pics, and battled self-doubt the whole time. But it was so worth it.

How has winning impacted your career or confidence?

It gave me the validation I needed. I know I’m good at what I do, but imposter syndrome is real. Now I feel more confident and finally raised my prices!

Is there a memorable student success story that stands out?

Definitely. One student came to a Locks Lash CLA class super nervous and doubting herself. I could relate. By the end, she was glowing with confidence and nailed the techniques. She now runs a busy salon in Wellington, so proud!

What’s one technique every lash artist should master?

Isolation. It keeps the set comfortable, prevents damage, and makes your work look clean. Perfect your isolation before anything else!

Are there any emerging trends in classic lash extensions that excite you?

I’m loving the new 3D printed ‘anime’ style lash trays. They’re fun, versatile, and let you create looks you couldn’t with regular trays.

If you weren’t in the lash industry, what would you be doing?

Probably back to flight attending, used to work for Air NZ. One of the many jobs I’ve had!

What’s something people would be surprised to learn about you?

I love fishing, used to do kickboxing, and I’m into heavy metal music.

What would you say to someone wanting to start in the beauty industry?

DO IT. Seriously, just do it. It was the best decision I’ve ever made. Beauty services are in demand worldwide; take advantage and get that cash! Plus, running your own business is amazing.
