#22 - Different Eye Shapes & What Style Suits Each Shape
Easy Styling Method; Your Clients Face Shape:
As a basic styling method you can use your clients basic face shape as the focus point to create more symmetry. Observing if your clients face needs to be made wider or longer is very easy to do and can be the foundation of your choice in design for them.
LONG/THIN FACE:
By placing the lashes in a Doll Look on a long faced client, you will be enhancing the longness of their face which may not be the most desired look. However if you place a Flared/Cat Eye style on a long faced client, it evens out the face which will be more pleasing to view.
ROUND FACE:
By placing the lashes in a more Flared/ Cat Eye Look, extending out at the ends with a flick, you are actually breaking the face in 1/2 and also creating the effect of making their face look wider and rounder. However if you placed the Doll Look on a round faced client then it makes their face appear longer and opens up their eyes.
By analysing the clients eye shape and then designing the style around them can also successfully bring about symmetry and proportion.
WIDE SET EYES
DO's
- Use shorter lengths towards the outer corner which will visually make the eyes look closer.
- The 'Natural' look will look the best
- Can also use the 'Open' or 'Doll' look on wide set eyes.
DON'T's
- Use the 'Swept', 'Baby' or 'Cat Eye' on wide set eyes. It will only bring the eyes further and them look even wider as a set.
HOODED EYES
Hooded eyes feature excess skin folding down from the brow bone to the lash line, which obscures your crease, shrinks your eyelids and can make you look drowsy. Lots of people have this eye shape from birth, but it could also be the result of your lid drooping with age.
DO's
- Stronger curls like C, CC, D & L will hide the hood beautifully (just make sure it doesn't curl back into the hood and cause discomfort to the client).
- Use the 'Doll', 'Natural' and 'Open' look on hooded eyes.
DON'T's
- Use short lashes and straight lashes like a B curl.
CLOSE SET EYES
You want to create the illusion of bringing the eyes further out toward the sides of the face.
DO's
- Use 'Cat Eye' or 'Swept' on close set eyes.
DON'T's
- Use 'Doll' for it as it will make the eyes look more deep set.
- Don't put much emphasis on the inner eye or it will make them look even closer. Put your focus on the outer edge.
ALMOND EYES
The most versatile eye shape and basically you can do what you want with them! There are no 'Do's' or 'Don't' really with Almond eyes.
MONOLID EYES
It's an eyelid that has no crease. Typically (but not only) Asians will have monolid eyes.
DO's
- Most styles will suit monolid eyes, however a 'Doll Look' will help to open up the eye area.
DON'T's
- Use B curls as they typically can't be seen from straight on.
- Important not to use L curls on monolid/asian eyes if the lashes are straight and pointing downward. The L curl will just emphasise the straightness and drag the eye down.
UP TURNED EYES
DO's
- Use 'Swept' or 'Cat Eye'.
- Use a lower curl like a B on the outer edge to bring the outer eye down slightly and a stronger curl through the centre like a C or D.
- 'Baby' style looks beautiful on up-turned eyes.
DON'T's
- Put length in the inner corner.
- Put a stronger curl on the outer edge like a D curl.
ROUND EYES
DO's
- Use 'Cat Eye', 'Swept' or 'Squirrel to elongate the eye and make it smaller & longer in appearance.
DON'T's
- Use a strong curl like a CC or D for it will make them look too surprised and emphasise the roundness of their eyes.
- Don't use 'Doll' or 'Open' for the same reason above.
DOWN-TURNED EYES
DO's
- Use the 'Natural', 'Doll' and 'Squirrel' on downturned eyes to lift the outer edge.
- Use stronger curls like C, CC and D which will help to lift the eyes. Especially add them on the outer edge with a softer curl through the centre eye.
DON'T's
- Try not to use too much length on the outer edge for it will encourage a droop.
- Don't use a B curl on outer edge, again it will encourage a droopy look.
- 'Cat Eye' isn't the best on a down turned eye.
