#111 WHEN LIFE GIVES YOU LEMONS

#111 WHEN LIFE GIVES YOU LEMONS
Posted on

This year has certainly taken us all on a ride! Especially for those who have lost their jobs due to Covid and have had to start a full clean slate.

From our last inspiring story we posted a couple of weeks ago (BLOG HERE), we got such a beautiful response of other new Lash Techs relating to Shayla's story that we just needed to post these 3 other Lash Techs journeys too.

The more we can inspire each other, the more we are absolutely not alone in this crazy time and can keep pushing 💙

TAHLIA'S STORY (Cafe Manager):

What were you doing before Covid and how long were you doing it for?

I was living on the Gold Coast up until March this year, working as the cafe manager for a large, busy service station, and had been there for about 8 months in that position. The hours were long and the pay wasn't that great.

My partner got offered a job in the mines up north so we decided to pack everything up and move only a few weeks after he had been offered the position.

We had been in this new town for a week before I found another job waitressing/bartending at the local Golf Club.

Literally a week after starting my new job, everything was shut down due to Covid.

Instead of sitting around and feeling down and hopeless (like I'm sure 99.99% of people were feeling at this time), I decided this was the kick up the butt I needed to get into gear, and looked into online courses for lash training to expand on my skill set in the beauty industry.

Did you have any experience in the beauty industry prior?

I have qualifications in full body waxing, eyebrow and eyelash tinting, and in basic manicure and pedicure, and grew up around hairdressers, so thankfully yes.

What were the first steps you took to begin?

I did a lot of research into what companies deliver online training with support whilst we moved to a town that was 2 hours away from Mackay QLD.

In hindsight, I wished that I had researched more into it all to compare different companies but I was just too eager to start learning.

What was going through your head mentally during this time?

I was extremely nervous, as we had just been approved for a house when I lost my job, so living on a single income was terrifying. But we managed to get through the worst of it all. I was also feeling quite lonely due to moving to a new town and knowing no one around.

Income wise, are you surprised/happy/disappointed with what you are making?

Income wise, it has started off very slow to be honest. Being a small mining town, it's all about word of mouth here. So taking the time to really market and advertise has been one of the hardest things to do. But after about 4-5 months of very sporadic appointments, I am starting to slowly fill my books which is an amazing feeling.

What do you think will happen post covid - will you return back to what you were doing? Is this just an in the meantime thing?

Lashing and beauty is something that I will definitely continue post Covid as it is something that I have wanted to do for a long time. And being able to build relationships with my clients is something I absolutely LOVE as well as being able to create my own schedule.

What is a piece of advice you would give to people in the same position as you?

My advice would be to go for it! But make sure that you 110% do your research into who you're going to study with and what support and training you get with them.

CHARLOTTE’S STORY (Sales Executive):

(Charlotte in the red)

What were you doing before Covid?

I was an Events & Conference Sales Executive

How long were you doing it for?

11 years

Did you have any experience in the beauty industry prior?

I have always been spray tanning clients on the side for about 10 years.

What were the first steps you took to begin your lash adventure?

I first started with the Locks Lash Classic course as I wanted to earn additional income and then I naturally just expanded to Lash Lift, Henna Brows, Brow Lamination and Facial Waxing.

What was going through your head mentally during this time?

I was scared at first, but as I had been offered a redundancy, I thought well now is my time to shine if I really go for it.

Income wise, are you surprised/happy/disappointed with what you are making?

I am super surprised. I was aiming to work 3 days per week (school hours) but am so heavily booked that I’m now working 6 days one week, 5 days the other, etc. I have tripled my previous salary. It’s pretty amazing.

What do you think will happen post Covid - will you return back to what you were doing?

I am going to continue doing my lash/beauty business as I am LOVING being my own boss, with my own hours and have started doing something I am truly passionate about and also enjoy being an inspiration for others.

Is this just an ‘in the meantime thing’ or future?

My future 💙

What is a piece of advice you would give to people in the same position as you?

Set yourself goals and keep your head up. It’s so important to remain positive and grateful for those family and friends who support you. Also remember not everyone can support you but always acknowledge them when they show a bit of interest.

LAUREN'S STORY (Flight Attendant):

What were you doing before Covid and how long were you doing it for?

Before Covid, I was working as a domestic cabin crew member for Qantas. I absolutely loved my job and always knew I wanted to work for Qantas. I had been doing it for 12 months before Covid hit as that is what I decided to do straight out of high school.

Did you have any experience in the beauty industry prior?

I had no prior experience in beauty whatsoever haha so it was a total leap of faith! I got into it through my own Lash Tech. As I had been chatting to her about everything going on, she recommended becoming one. She told me about Locks Lash and that’s when I enrolled in the Classic Course the very next day.

What were the first steps you took to begin?

We spent 2 months with no income (apart from my partner getting job keeper, as I didn’t qualify) and that’s when I went to my first appointment back with my beautiful Lash Tech, Sarah and after I saw her I came up with a plan.

What was going through your head mentally during this time?

Through this time in my life with being stood down from Qantas and having no source of income, my partner and I were extremely stressed. He works for Qantas also, as an engineer. I remember getting the email from Qantas notifying me that I was stood down. I was in Perth and just got into my hotel room from a long day of flying, knowing that we were getting notified that day, I read it and just broke down in tears.  I rang my partner to let him know and he told me that he was stood down as well. Finding this out was extremely worrying as we didn’t know how we were going to survive with a mortgage and other bills, etc. But I picked myself up and got on with it because in those sort of situations, you do what you’ve gotta do. And it has made both my partner and I such stronger people because of it.

Income wise, are you surprised/happy/disappointed with what you are making?

I thoroughly enjoyed the Classic Lash course and am LOVING doing it in real life! Income wise, I am satisfied with what I am making at the moment. I only did the course 4 weeks ago so my client base is still building up but I can say I have a few clients coming back for refills now, so that is AMAZING!

What do you think will happen post covid - will you return back to what you were doing? Is this just an in the meantime thing?

My plans for post Covid are to still do lashes on the side for when/if I go back to Qantas. But right now, I am absolutely loving it and am looking into doing a few more courses through Locks Lash to expand my business!

What is a piece of advice you would give to people in the same position as you?

My piece of advice would be that you can do absolutely ANYTHING if you put your mind to. Just roll with the punches, because life will steer you in directions you never thought you’d take!
